Dr. Philip Wood

Dr. Philip A. Wood graduated from Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine(DVM, MS- Pathology) in 1980, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine Graduate School in 1983 (PhD in Pathology). He was then on the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for 5 years before returning to the faculty at UAB for 20 years. In 2008 he was appointed Professor at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in Orlando. In 2017, after having an NIH funded laboratory for 30 years, Dr. Wood retired from medical research and academics and returned to his original passion for clinical practice. He focuses on internal medicine, especially metabolic & endocrine diseases, and nutrition of which he did research, taught, and published on for decades. One of his early research accomplishments was validating the use of hemoglobin A1c measurements to evaluate diabetic dogs. Over the years he diagnosed and characterized several rare inherited metabolic diseases in dogs, cats, horses, cattle and mice.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Wood enjoys golf, and cycling with his wife Judy. They enjoy 2 rescued Labrador retriever mix dogs Abby and Walter, as well as spending time with their 2 adults sons John and Joseph.
